Overview of Pinworms

Pinworms are very small worms in the intestines that cause infection. This worm affects millions of people every year, especially kids. The common symptoms of pinworms are itching and restless sleep. Pinworms are highly contagious, and they spread when one swallows the tiny pinworm eggs. The eggs can be on the hands or under the fingernails of someone who is contaminated.

The eggs hatch within 1 to 2 months after entering the digestive system. Female adult pinworms lay eggs outside the skin around the anus, and this causes the area to become itchy, especially at night. When someone scratches the area, the egg enters their fingers. The hand can then carry the egg to the mouth, where it goes back into the body.
